Telegram
Connect Telegram by pasting a bot token from Telegram's own @BotFather. Your agent gets its own bot identity and works in groups on @mention.
Telegram is the one channel where your agent gets its own identity, a dedicated bot account with its own @username, not an account you already own. You create that bot with Telegram's own @BotFather, copy the bot token it hands you, and paste it into AnyBot. There's no OAuth and no Meta review. AnyBot validates the token, registers the incoming webhook for you on install, and stores the bot's username so it can tell when it's mentioned in a group, so once the token is saved, there's nothing else to host or configure.
Before you start
- A Telegram account to talk to @BotFather (any personal account works. It only creates the bot).
- Decide which agent should answer before you connect, so replies start immediately.
- You can connect more than one Telegram bot to a space. Each is its own channel.
Connect
-
In Telegram, open a chat with @BotFather and send
/newbot. Give it a display name and a unique@username(it must end inbot). -
@BotFather replies with an HTTP API token (a long
number:lettersstring). Copy it. -
In your space, open Channels → Telegram, paste the token into Bot Token, and save. AnyBot calls Telegram to verify the token and reads back your bot's name and username.
-
On save, AnyBot registers the webhook automatically (with a private secret) and the channel flips to Connected. Your agent is live on that bot.
That's the whole setup. You never host a webhook or poll for updates yourself.
On this channel
Your agent handles Telegram's everyday message types both ways:
| Type | Received | Sent |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Yes | Yes (formatted, with reply-quoting) |
| Photos | Yes (with caption) | Yes (with caption) |
| Voice notes | Yes (transcribed) | Yes (as audio) |
| Audio files | Yes | Yes |
| Documents | Yes | Yes |
- Typing indicator: the agent shows Telegram's "typing…" action while it composes a reply.
- Reply-quoting: it quotes the specific message it's answering when a thread needs to stay clear.
- Captions on incoming photos and documents are read as the message text.
- Stickers, contacts, locations, and inline/callback buttons aren't processed as agent input.
Groups
Add your bot to a Telegram group and it stays quiet during ordinary chatter. It replies only when it's @mentioned (by its exact bot username) or when someone replies to one of its messages, so it never talks over the conversation. This matches Telegram's own bot privacy behavior in groups.
Channel settings
Telegram uses the standard channel settings block (greeting, auto-reply, business hours, an out-of-hours message, and a reply rate limit) applied to every message on this channel. See Channel settings for the full list and what each control does.
Troubleshooting
- "Invalid bot token" on save: the token was mistyped or revoked. Re-copy it from @BotFather (use
/mybots → API Token), or/revokeand paste the fresh one. - Bot silent in a group. It only answers on
@mentionor a reply to its message. Confirm you used its exact@username. - Channel shows Disconnected: the token was revoked or regenerated in @BotFather; paste the current token to reconnect.
- Replies arrive unformatted: if a reply's rich formatting is malformed, AnyBot re-sends it as plain text so you still get the message; the content is never dropped.
